Athens-Clarke County Tree Management Ordinance

On June 7, 2005, the Athens-Clarke County Commission passed into law the Athens-Clarke County Tree Management Ordinance (TMO). The TMO is a first for the Athens-Clarke County community and is significant in three major respects:
  1. It helps protect the community against unbridled land development practices that give little or no consideration to trees as viable components of the landscape.
  2. It helps protect the development and building communities against unwarranted outside pressures, and demands beyond the TMO requirements.
  3. Provides a valuable step toward the CTC mission by addressing tree densities, species selection and distribution, and recognizes trees as variables to be considered and properly weighted in the development and land use decision-making process.
The slideshow below outlines the TMO policy points, development approach, and implementation. It clearly defines what the TMO will do and will not do.
