Beginning in 1997 the Urban Tree Advisory Committee, followed by the Community Tree Council, has presented the Friend of Trees Award to persons or organizations that exemplify good stewardship of trees in Athens-Clarke County. Selection of recipients is based on the use and/or preservation of trees in unique ways that enhance property aesthetics and/or demonstrate protection and concern for the environment. Since 1997, 35 awards have been presented.
The Community Tree Council is pleased to present the 2010 Friend of Trees Award to Rick Burrell.

This year the CTC is proud to be able to honor Rick Burrell, a teacher at Coile Middle School who was largely responsible for organizing nearly everyone at Coile for a major tree planting at the school on Arbor Day 2010. Over 200 seedlings and more than a dozen large caliper trees were planted by the students and community volunteers.

The tree planting helped bring the students together and spurred the creation of an environmental action club at the school
