Notes: The water oak is a medium size tree with a conical to round top 50 to 80' tall (a Clarke County co-Champion: 66.8" in diameter, 100' tall with a 60' crown spread). It is used extensively in the South as a rapidly growing shade tree with a moderate life span. The acorn is small (1/2" long and wide) with profuse production becoming a nuisance around habitation, Commercially of little value because of the brittle nature of the wood and propensity for splitting and development of shake (ring separation in the wood), Used mainly as low-grade lumber such as pallets and railroad ties.

Bark:Light brown to black with furrows producing scaly ridges on older trees.
