Notes: The Scarlet oak is a species of known distinction because of its brilliant scarlet fall colors, and is probably best utilized as an ornamental in this regard. Not a small tree, it is best suited to open spaces with room to grow, which it does quite rapidly. Because of its thin bark, the species is highly susceptible to fire damage which usually results in severe heart rot. Commercially the Scarlet oak wood is intermixed with the other red oaks, though technically somewhat inferior.

Bark: A thin bark almost black, broken by shallow fissures and scaly ridges. Inner bark is red to orange-pink.
