Notes: Post oak is a valuable timber species marketed as white oak. The species is drought resistant and can be used on dryer sites in landscape planting. Although considered a small to medium oak in its typical dry-rocky environment, on silty loam soils as often found in the piedmont, the post oak can attain considerable size and vigor as this champion demonstrates. The common name derives from its use as fence posts, and native Americans used the post oak for medication. One of the largest known specimens is in the city of Jefferson, Jackson County, Georgia. It measures 75" in diameter and 84' in height.

Bark:The post oak bark is gray with shallow fissures and scaly ridges.
