Notes: Also called a rock oak, this species is a medium sized oak and is a tree of rocky places. Here it associates with various oaks and hickories, pitch and Virginia pine. The nut is richly brown, enclosed in a cup covering half the nut, is sweet and relished by squirrels and other hard-mast loving wild life. The trees are used for fire wood, fence posts, railroad ties and is a good source of tannin. The intertwining roots are wide spread and serve as important erosion control structures.

Bark:Dark reddish brown to dark gray, mature bark with deep v-shaped furrows with broad ridges covered with small scales, and up to 1 1/2" thick
