Notes: A large sized tree generally considered unsuitable in a home landscape situation. Best suited to large area with room to grow. It is a versatile tree adapting to a wide variety of soil conditions, from sandy uplands to boggy wetlands. Best suited in upland sites with limestone soils, but fares better than most oaks in heavy clay soils as found in the Georgia piedmont.

Bark: Thick, rough bark, dark gray to gray-brown in color, with deep furrows.
