Notes: A short, medium sized tree usually exists on poor sites with dry sandy or clay soils in the east-central and southern hardwood forest zones. Considered a pioneer species (first to regenerate an area), the Blackjack oak is one of the few "Red oaks" that have occluded vessels similar to the members of the White oak group. It is not a high value timber species but is used for railroad ties, fence posts and charcoal. The tree is a bit rough looking and except for an interesting conversation piece, is probably not desirable as a landscape or street species.

Bark: Thick, rough bark, nearly black, with deep furrows. Mature bark forms irregular or rectangular plates with an orange inner bark.
