Notes: Black Walnut is a large tree having a heavy appearance and attaining heights of 80' or more with a spread almost equaling that when open grown. The State champion has a circumference of 227" (72.3" D), is 83' tall with a 112' spread". Prefers deep rich soil where it does best, and the fruit, a nut, is sweet and edible. The trunk tends to be stout but when growing in dense stands becomes tall and stately with small crown. Commercially one of the most valuable trees in North America. Highly prized for furniture, gun stocks, cabinets and paneling. The highly valuable walnut has attracted "walnut rustlers" who have developed sophisticated techniques to remove trees in the dead of night and by helicopters.

Bark: Dark brown to grayish black, divided by deep narrow furrows, into thin ridges resembling a somewhat diamond shaped pattern.
